The University

Marywood University, Scranton, Pennsylvania prepares students to have a positive impact on society at regional and global levels while providing each student with the foundation for success in an interdependent world. Marywood University is coeducational, comprehensive, residential, and Catholic. Founded in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the University serves men and women from a variety of backgrounds and religions. The University enrolls over 3,000 students in an array of undergraduate and graduate programs. Committed to enriching human lives through ethical and religious values and a tradition of service and motivated by a pioneering, progressive spirit, Marywood provides a framework for educational excellence that enables students to develop fully as persons and to master professional and leadership skills necessary for meeting human needs.

Location

Situated on a hill top, Marywood's scenic 115-acre campus is part of an attractive residential area of the city of Scranton in northeastern Pennsylvania. With a population of 78,000, Scranton is the fifth-largest city in Pennsylvania and is the county seat of Lackawanna County, whose population is approximately 213,000. Marywood has the advantage of being relatively close to major cities of the northeast. Distances by car to some of these cities are as follows:

2 1/2 hours from New York City
2 1/2 hours from Philadelphia
4 hours from Washington, D.C.
5 1/2 hours from Boston

Several airlines serve the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, which is 20 minutes from campus. The Pocono Mountains, offering spectacular scenery and an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities including downhill skiing, are only a few minutes from campus.

Facilities

Marywood continues to expand its facilities with a new Robert J. Mellow Center for Althletics and Wellness , Loughran Hall and Center for Spiritual Life, and renovations to both the Health and Physical Education and Madonna Hall buildings. More than 330 microcomputers are found throughout the campus, giving students access to the library's online catalog, CD-ROM databases, software, and Internet resources.

Marywood's Learning Resources Center (LRC) houses library services, instructional technology services, and computer training and user support services. The library collection includes more than 220,000 volumes, nearly 16,000 current print and electronic journal subscriptions, and more than 49,000 media items. The LRC provides World Wide Web, CD-ROM, and full-text databases. It also participates in the interlibrary loan network with 8,650 libraries. The research collection includes many index and abstract services.

Academic Program

Marywood's programs are administered through four degree-granting colleges. Undergraduate degrees are offered in over 50 academic programs including the arts, sciences, music, fine arts, social work, and nursing. All students are required to complete a core curriculum in the liberal arts in addition to the courses in their major. Opportunities for undergraduates abound through double majors, honors and independent study programs, practicums, internships, and study abroad. Army and Air Force ROTC programs are available.

The University is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104; 267-284-5000), and its programs are accredited by the overseeing organizations in each discipline. A full list of Marywood's accrediations and approvals is available.

Faculty

Of nearly 300 faculty members at Marywood, 132 are full-time and 80 percent of these hold the Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1. Faculty members are evaluated on both their teaching and their scholarly and artistic activities.

Financial Aid

Marywood offers a comprehensive program of financial aid to assist students in meeting educational costs. Eligibility for federal and state-funded programs is based on demonstrated financial need. In determining financial need, a federal eligibility formula is used to analyze family income and assets. In addition, nearly $20 million of institutional aid is awarded annually to Marywood students. Applicants to Marywood are considered for all financial assistance programs for which they qualify. Candidates are required to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Marywood application form, preferably by February 15. Admission Requirements

Candidates for admission should demonstrate reasonable progress toward graduation in an accredited secondary school, have graduated from a secondary school, or offer evidence of an equivalent secondary education. Each candidate should show satisfactory academic preparation in 16 units of subject matter, including 4 units of English, 3 units of social studies, 2 units of mathematics, 1 unit of science with laboratory, and 6 additional units. Either SAT I or ACT scores are required for those who wish to enter as freshmen.

In addition to fulfilling general admission requirements, candidates for admission to a degree program in art, education, music, nursing, and pre-physician assistant studies must meet special standards established by the department. Prior to enrollment, music, theater, and art candidates are required to audition or to present an art portfolio.

For certain programs candidates without the recommended distribution of units may be eligible for admission if their course work as a whole and the results of their tests offer evidence of a strong foundation for college work. Candidates who are deficient in required course work may complete appropriate work during the summer or the first year in college

A student who demonstrates satisfactory academic performance at another college may apply for admission as a transfer student. Academic courses presented for transfer should be equivalents of courses required by the programs of study at Marywood. Students should have earned a grade of C or higher in their course work; C- will not transfer. A student should expect to earn a minimum of 60 credits at Marywood University; ordinarily at least one half of the credits required for a major must also be earned at Marywood.

International candidates are required to meet the academic standards for admission, demonstrate proficiency in the use of the English language, and submit documentation of having sufficient funds to cover educational and living expenses for the duration of study. To certify proficiency in the use of English, international applicants whose primary language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Application and Information

Applications for admission are considered on a rolling basis; however, candidates are encouraged to submit applications by March 1. Applications received after March 1 are considered on the basis of available space in particular programs. To be considered for admission, applicants must submit to the Office of Admissions a completed application, a nonrefundable $35 application fee (waived if you apply online), an official high school transcript with an indication of class rank, an official report of scores from the SAT I or ACT, and at least one letter of recommendation. Students can also apply online

Transfer students must submit a completed application, a nonrefundable $35 application fee (waived if you apply online), an official high school transcript, official academic transcript(s) reflecting all college course work for which the candidate has enrolled, and at least one letter of recommendation. .

All submitted credentials become the property of Marywood University and are not returnable to the applicant. Admission standards and policies are free of discrimination on grounds of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.
